Once Upon a Time, I had a blog. . . . . when my kids were still in preschool, kindergarten & elementary school. These are "diary entries" from then. I'm so happy that I documented along the way. These memories and thoughts are precious to me. They'll be mixed in with modern day musings as well. I hope it helps you know that all mothers are both perfect & imperfect in their own ways. . . . . and we're all just doing our best and trying to raise productive, happy humans.

Do We Really Need to Ban the TV for a Week?

Diary Entry ~~ January 4, 2011

We have a problem with TV, video games and  (really) any kind of electronic media in our house.  You know it's become a big problem when your 6 year old has a 20 minute crying fit because he can't watch a movie the minute he walks through the door.  Yep!  This is a big problem.  And it's funny, because when I first became a mother, I swore that my son wouldn't watch TV until he was at least 2.  Then, I caught pneumonia.  With no family around to help me with my son while I was sick, I resorted to letting him watch Baby Einstein videos.  And so it began.

Now, here we are 5 years later(almost exactly!) and I need to ban the TV.  I just put a sign up on the TV--NO TV FOR A WEEK!   At this point, this could either be really good for my family, or a horrible, horrible experiment in self torture for me.  I usually let the kids watch a movie while I'm cleaning, cooking, doing laundry. . .

How will I keep the kids busy, without killing each other?  They're usually pretty good about playing together.  They're very imaginative.  Sometimes they play really well together.  And then, there's the other times.  We'll see which type of "play" this week has.  I'm about to embark on a crazy, crazy week.  I know to some mothers it might not seem crazy.  But, for me it is.  Wish me luck!  And if you have any tips, let me know!!

Have you ever had to ban the TV?  How did it go?  I'll keep you updated!
